Sustainable U Scholarship

Who: Crescent Electric Supply Company and GE Lighting are proud to introduce the Sustainable U Scholarship. Students who will be enrolled in their junior or senior year of high school during the fall 2017 semester at area high schools (Alternative Learning Center, Hempstead, Senior, Wahlert Catholic, Western Dubuque, and East Dubuque High School) are eligible to apply.

What: The Sustainable U Scholarship will be awarded to the winner of a sustainability essay contest held in conjunction with the 2017 Growing Sustainable Communities Conference, to be held at the Grand River Center in Dubuque on October 3-4, 2017.

To apply, students must submit an essay of 500-1,000 words that addresses a significant sustainability challenge faced by current and future generations; describe the economic, ecologic, and social impacts of the problem; and propose strategies that current and future generations can incorporate to solve or mitigate the identified problem.

Finalists will be invited to the 2017 Growing Sustainable Communities Conference as guests of Crescent Electric Supply Company and GE Lighting. The winning author will receive a $1,000 scholarship to be used toward college or professional development expenses following the student's graduation from high school.

Why: Involving the youth of our communities and asking for their input and ideas to create a more sustainable future is the first step toward establishing a sense of responsibility and stewardship. The Sustainable U Scholarship is designed to evoke creative problem solving and community involvement.

How: Students should prepare essays of no less than 500 words and no more than 1,000 words on what they believe is a significant sustainability challenge faced by current and/or future generations. Examples of topics could include, but are not limited to, energy and climate, transportation, land use, housing and buildings, natural resources, environmental quality, waste management, clean and safe drinking water, and food access.

Essays, along with an optional author photo, must be submitted using the form above no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 8. Students should include their name, email address, mailing address, phone, and current status in high school in their application.

Essays will be judged by representatives from Crescent Electric Supply Company, GE Lighting, the City of Dubuque, and Sustainable City Network.

Authors of the top 30 essays will be invited to the Growing Sustainable Communities Conference as guests of conference sponsors Crescent Electric Supply Company and GE Lighting, and have their essays displayed in the exhibit hall. The winning scholarship recipient will be announced during the luncheon keynote on Tuesday, October 3.
